Each year the students of Shellharbour Public have
remembered, with reverence and respect, the valiant efforts made by the ANZAC
soldiers at a ceremony held in the school hall. Members of our school
parliament have attended community services to lay wreaths at memorials.
2014 marked the 100th year since the commencement of World War One in 1914. Commemoration of the ‘war to end all wars’ is to be ongoing until 2018 in line with the end of the war in 1918. This year, students in each grade will analyse a different aspect of the Gallipoli Campaign, by viewing and discussing primary sources of the time and recollections and interpretations outlined in secondary sources. Involvement in this study will endeavour to deepen the students’ understanding of the circumstances under which sacrifices were made to ensure that Australians could enjoy the lifestyle we do today.

Kindergarten:
Kindergarten will listen to and discuss the text Anzac Ted.
They will discuss the value of having something familiar to help you feel safe
and happy when away from those you love and how despite differences how one
must develop tolerance and acceptance.
Year 1:
Year 1 will view the video of the text Simpson’s Donkey and
identify and discuss the primary and secondary source information. They will
investigate and record information on the significance of the red poppy as a
symbol of remembrance and use ArtRage to draw their own poppy.
Year 2:
Year 2 will investigate ‘life in the trenches’ and write a
postcard home to their family members detailing the conditions. The students
will be required to provide a ‘balance’ in their writings; you want to let your
family know Vs you don’t want them to worry more than they are.
Year 3:
Year 3 will view and discuss information gleaned from the
ABC’s 3D interactive site of the Gallipoli Campaign and produce a 5Ws poem to
provide a literary account of the landing.
Year 4:
Year 4 will view the BTN video entitled indigenous ANZACs,
discuss their war experiences and develop an understanding of the importance of
‘connecting spirits’ to relatives. Students will create a mind map to record
and display their knowledge.
Year 5:
Year 5 will view WW1 enlistment posters and come to
understand the meaning of propaganda, its use during the war and how it changed
as the war dragged on. They will examine the use of pathos, ethos and logos in
the slogans and images. From this knowledge the students will create their own
posters as propaganda to convince others as to why it is imperative that we not
forget what the soldiers and their families endured.
Year 6:
Year 6 will engage in the analysis of war records held on
our local soldiers at the National Archives of Australia in order to answer the
question, ‘Who was this man?’. The scenario presented to the students will be
that documents have been uncovered in a disused area of the National Archives
and it is their responsibility to interpret information from the primary
sources discovered to encapsulate the particular soldier’s life. It is expected
that the students will provide insight into the hardships, difficulties and
minds of the soldiers and their families.
Composites:
